Chicago Skyline Series: The Willis Tower — 5 Cool Facts

The Willis Tower is one of the most iconic buildings in the downtown Chicago skyline!

Formerly known as the Sears Tower, the Willis Tower is the perfect place to catch the best views of the Chicago skyline with its very own Skydeck. Located in the Loop, this 1,350 ft.- high deck, peers out into the city as a main attraction for Chicagoans and tourists alike. Here’s the scoop on what you need to know about the famous Willis Tower.

#1 The Willis Tower is the second tallest building in America!

At one point, starting in 1973, it was the tallest building in the world — surpassing the World Trade Center for nearly 25 years. Standing at approximately 1,720 feet at the very tip-top, the Willis Tower is now the 2nd tallest building in the U.S. and its the 14th tallest in the world!

#2 More than 1 million people visit the Skydeck every year!

The Ledge, the glass balcony that extends four feet from the tower on the 103rd floor, is infamous in Chicago. With breaktaking views spanning over 4 states, standing on The Ledge is a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable experience. Inside Skydeck, you’ll find interactive touch-screens exhibits, trivia games, and much more!

#3 Two real-life “Spider-men” climbed the Willis Tower!

In 1981, a man named Dan Goodman made his very own Spider-man suit and decided to scale the building. Using suction cups, sky hooks, and camming devices, he began his 7-hour climb to the top of the tower. Another man, Alain “Spiderman” Robert, followed suit in 1999. This French urban climber made it all the way to the top using his bare hands and feet!

#4 Hollywood loves using the Willis Tower in movies and TV shows!

Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Monk, Kenan and Kel, Stargate SG-1 — these are just a few of the TV shows that the tower’s been featured in. The Willis Tower was also a focal point in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I-Robot, Man of Steel, Divergent, and many others!

#5 The Willis Tower is equivalent to 101 football fields of space!

With 4.5 million sq.ft. of floor space, the Willis Tower is massive. It took 2,000 workers and 3 years of construction to make it into the iconic structure that it is today. Wonder how they keep the tower sparkling? There are 6 roof-top mounted robotic machines that keep all 16,000 windows of the Willis Tower clean.

Downtown Chicago Then and Now: West Loop Edition

Welcome to the West Loop — home to many of the most delicious and popular restaurants in downtown Chicago, and the birthplace of Harpo Studios, where Oprah created her massive media empire. Before it became one of the trendiest neighborhoods in the city, the West Loop had a rich history. Explore then and now, the West Loop edition!

WEST LOOP THEN:

In the 1860’s, the West Loop area was known for having many of Chicago’s most fashionable homes — with the famous Washington Boulevard, which showcased many prominent churches of that era.

With new construction surrounding this community, it was time to make a change so that this area could keep pace. In the 1880’s, many of the single-family fashionable homes were demolished in order to make way for the next phase: becoming a new warehouse and manufacturing district.

By the turn of the century, the Near West Side became one of the most densely populated communities in Chicago. With new developments of elevated railroads and the Illinois Medical District, including Rush Medical College, Cook County Hospital, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, business was booming.

The final phase, created by famed Chicago architect, Daniel Burnham, was a master plan: The West Loop Gate. It was named after his vision for the community to become the “gateway from the west to the Loop”.

WEST LOOP NOW:

The West Loop hosts unique loft-style living spaces, a budding art gallery district, and tons of award-winning restaurants. Check out “Restaurant Row” spots like Vivo and Next. The West Loop is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after neighborhoods to live in! It’s also home to the ultra-exclusive Soho House — an upscale members-only club including fine dining, a rooftop pool, a spa, and a 17,000 sq. ft. gymnasium.

As for entertainment in the West Loop, you have plenty of options to choose from. See popular nightclubs like The Mid, Transit, and 8Fifty8. There’s also Union Park — a hotspot for concerts and festivals like Pitchfork and North Coast!

We hope you enjoyed Then and Now: West Loop Edition! Ready to live in the popular West Loop neighborhood? Then call us or stop by our office at 180 N. Wacker. We’d be happy to keep you in the loop!

Originally, the Lakeshore East area was used for the Illinois Central Railroad yards. Pete Dye developed it into Metro Golf, a 9-hole golf course, in 1994. During this time before the 21st century the newest developments were The Buckingham, The Parkshore, Three Illinois Center, North Harbor Tower and The Shoreham.

It’s also near the city’s central business district as well as shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue are nearby, too.

The area is ideal for many types of residents, especially dog owners. In fact, Lakeshore East is a dog-friendly neighborhood that features an off-leash dog park on the south edge of the Lakeshore East Park. The park even contains a water feature and a double-gated enclosure. Additionally, the neighborhood is public-transit friendly: A convenient way to get around is via the Pedway, a tunnel system with access points all over the downtown area. You can also travel via the green, red and blue CTA lines.

The Lakeshore East neighborhood is at the cutting edge for real estate and architecture. Furthermore, it houses 340 on the Park, which is the Midwest’s first Silver LEED certified building. The Aqua building is the 1st skyscraper in Chicago to combine luxury rentals, a hotel and retail all into one 87-story building! You’ll also find luxury apartments at Cascade, North Harbor Tower, Coast and The Tides at Lakeshore East. However, this is just the beginning. Downtown Apartment Company Redesigns Wacker Drive Office

At Downtown Apartment Company (DAC), we are always making changes and striving to create a great work environment. Recently, we completed a redesign of our office located at 180 North Wacker Drive.   We were seeking to create an even better environment that fit with our team culture.

First, we needed some more comfortable couches and a full gaming system to go with it. Nothing like playing a quick game of Wii in the middle of the afternoon!  Second, we thought to ourselves, “Who doesn’t like popcorn in the middle of the afternoon?” So, we bought a popcorn machine to enjoy throughout the day.  Literally, we can make a batch in two minutes.  You’ll have to test us to be sure though! Third, we needed more of an old-school coffee machine – nothing like the fresh smell of coffee in the morning! Finally, we redesigned the space to create more of an open working environment.

At DAC, we have a team of real estate professionals that work really hard and are passionate about serving our rental clients. With that said, we also have a lot of fun along the way.  Our Loop office now better matches what we stand for as a growing real estate company.

Additionally, be sure to check out a few pics below of our downtown Chicago office.  The best way to get a feel for all the changes is to stop by yourself.  Furthermore, if you are strolling on Wacker Drive, please feel free to stop in, get a little popcorn, and maybe a quick game of Wii!

Downtown Chicago – Then and Now: Streeterville Edition

Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, the Skyline Stage, the John Hancock Center. These are just a few of the famous attractions that make up the ever-popular Streeterville neighborhood! Streeterville is known for its unique restaurants, one-of-a-kind skyscrapers, and amazing scenery. This area also has a rich history that has made it into the luxury neighborhood that it is today.

STREETERVILLE THEN:

The man, the myth, the legend — George Streeter is the one to thank for helping to create what we now know as Streeterville. Before he arrived by boat in the late 1880’s, the area was not much more than a patch of land and a sandbar. Even still, he recognized the possibility of the place and kept his eye on it. After more than 180 acres of new land were created by the Lincoln Park Board, Streeter knew that he had to take action. He wanted to claim the area as his own, under the name “District of Lake Michigan.”

For years, he battled for that right. Unfortunately, Streeter did not have the best reputation due to his reckless personality. He was frequently sued for fraud in his attempts to claim the land. Despite all of this, his lifelong battle for the property made him infamous and his legacy lives on.

STREETERVILLE NOW:

The neighborhood now has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Streeterville is home to many luxury apartments throughout the neighborhood! With its upscale stores on the Magnificent Mile, prestigious campuses like Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and Navy Pier — the #1 most visited attraction in Chicago, it’s no wonder why the neighborhood is one of the most sought after. The dining experiences, the landmarks, the culture — they are all here waiting for you to explore!

Before it was called “Old Town,” this neighborhood was known as “The Cabbage Patch.” Originally, it was a popular area for immigrant farmers in the 19th century to grow their crops specifically cabbage ones, along with celery and potatoes. During the World War II era, the Chicago’s Civil Defense Agency marked off North, Clark, and Ogden avenues as a defense area. This triangular area, today, is known as the Old Town Triangle. It is managed and preserved by a non profit organization called the Old Town Triangle Association.

The actual “Old Town” name comes from the popular annual art fairs, or “The Old Town Holiday” fairs that were hosted in the years following the war. As time went on, Old Town also became a mecca for hippie culture and folk music, throughout the 1960s and 1970s. And still, to this day, folk music thrives in Old Town and is a huge part of its identity.

Downtown Chicago – Then and Now: Gold Coast Edition

Beautiful brownstones, magnificent mansions, high-rise condos the Gold Coast is definitely a highlight when it comes to downtown living! As a historic district, the neighborhood has a rich past and its extraordinary architecture stands the test of time. This upscale area continues to amaze residents and visitors alike, as it manages to remain elegant, timeless, and luxurious.

Gold Coast: Then

The Gold Coast was originally referred to as the Astor Street District. The name came from John Jacob Astor  one of the richest men in America in the 1800s. Even though he wasn’t from Chicago, the attachment of his name to the area drew in crowds of other wealthy individuals and families. One of these influential individuals was Potter Palmer, an early landowner in the neighborhood that was instrumental in the development of the Gold Coast.

Palmer purchased a lot of land, most of which had been affected by the Great Chicago Fire in the late 1800s, and converted most of the swampy areas into what we now know as Lake Shore Drive. His greatest accomplishment was having the “Palmer Mansion” built, which was the largest home in all of Chicago at the time. This 42-room mansion that was shaped like a castle was built as a gift for his beloved wife, Bertha.

Developments continued to expand, as more and more people continued to move to the neighborhood. One of the most famous homes, the James Charnley House, still stands today and is considered as a national historic landmark, and is currently used as a museum.

Gold Coast: Now

Today, the Gold Coast neighborhood is the 7th richest urban area in the United States! Located in the Near North Side community, the neighborhood is bounded by Oak Street, Clark Street, Lake Shore Drive, and North Avenue. Guide To Living In Streeterville

Gateway to Chicago, Streeterville Chicago.

Streeterville has occasionally been called a gateway to Chicago, and as area assessments go that isn’t too far off the mark. Living in Streeterville, Chicago, means being around world-renowned shopping, dining, architecture, culture and much more. The neighborhood is probably best known as the family-friendly home of Navy Pier, but beyond the pier, it has a lot to offer. The Streeterville neighborhood boasts dining options ranging from four-star French cuisine and brunch specialists to good old fashioned pub food. Entertainment comes in the form of outdoor recreation at Ohio Street Beach or arts appreciation at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Sandwiched between the Chicago River, the shore of Lake Michigan and the southern half of the Magnificent Mile, Streeterville is truly downtown Chicago, unfiltered, and pretty much everything the Loop has to offer is right at its resident’s fingertips. The neighborhood’s top half is dominated by Northwestern Memorial Hospital and a literal sea of doctor’s offices, healthcare clinics and rehabilitation centers. By contrast, Streeterville’s bottom half features an almost uniquely attractive assortment of spectacularly finished new construction rental condominiums and luxury apartment buildings with breathtaking views— in addition to the Tribune Tower, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, the NBC Tower and a string of hotels and high-rise office buildings.

What Attracts Renters to Streeterville

The story of how Streeterville got its name—from “Captain” George Wellington Streeter—is a controversial tale littered with gun battles, false property deeds and years’ worth of eviction suits. It began in 1886 when the Captain’s ship found itself lodged in one of the Lake’s sandbar after a storm. After the storm, Streeter invited building contractors to pile up waste around it as they would have back when Lake Michigan was used as a dumping ground during the cleanup following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Streeter claimed the marshland that piling process left behind as his own and it wasn’t until decades later that the courts could finally rule against him. You’ll find a statue of the Captain standing on this formerly contested site as a reference to its early history. That sandbar is now some of Downtown Chicago’s most sought after rental real estate.

Fortunately, the neighborhood’s main attraction is even more colorful than that eccentric founder: Navy Pier is a picturesque playground filled with amusement rides, gift shops and eateries, its docks are lined with sightseeing boats and bicycles. In addition to sweeping lakefront views, Navy Pier is home to its own beer garden and evening fireworks in the summer, as well as year-round favorites, Chicago Children’s Museum and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Renting there means you’re never more than a short walk to the beach, where you can pick up a bike trail that extends south past the Museum of Science and Industry and north all the way to Northwestern University’s Evanston campus. The shopping options range from the absurdly upscale to the ridiculously swank and the restaurants range from legendary BBQ pits to haute cuisine. Residents willing to step just over the neighborhood’s official boundaries by a block or two, the options increase from substantial to overwhelming. Streeterville also plays host to a 21-screen multiplex, several health clubs, an ultra-modern bowling alley, and plenty of gourmet grocery options.

Restaurants to Check Out in Streeterville

Living in Streeterville means being surrounded by great Chicago destinations, especially when it comes to food. From one of Downtown Chicago’s last black tie bistros to a hearth warmed family-owned takeout joint, Streeterville boasts an attractive mix of laid-back to classy establishments where you’re likely to find many of your neighbors enjoying its upscale and its downscale spots on the same night.

  • Les Nomadees – This Streeterville townhouse is one of the last, jackets required, classic French white-tablecloth occasion restaurants downtown. Chef Roland Liccioni serves up elegantly executed plates paired with a marvelous wine list. It’s not exactly an inexpensive night out, but the generally impeccable service helps as does the food’s, well-earned, reputation for being as good as it is expensive.
  • Murasaki Sake – This lounge on East Ontario is well known for having what could be best described as a cool speakeasy like flavor. Its low hung turquoise lights, pink walls, fluorescent halo wrapped columns practically scream jazz age. Fortunately, Murasaki’s also the best sake bar in town, with DJ’s who know their business and a pricey but thorough list of top-shelf Asian grog and succulent Japanese tasters.
  • Sayat Nova – Named for a famous troubadour this Armenian restaurant’s unassuming facade conceals a cavernous, lantern-lit, interior that boasts low ceilings, semiprivate romantic alcoves, the aforementioned light fixtures, and a variety of attractive cultural artifacts on display. Sayat Nova’s agreeably seasoned cuisine makes for an enjoyable casual lunch or dinner in the heart of Streeterville.
  • Pelago Ristorante – This spot pairs classic Italian flourish with contemporary design to create a truly elegant 60-seat dining room. Situated in Streeterville’s Raffaello hotel, Chef Mauro Mafrici blends classic and contemporary Italian at this trendy eatery. Pelago has a lunch menu that offers up creative pastas served beside seafood or veal, and a dinner menu that features Italian seafood.
  • Lookingglass Theatre – Founded in 1988, and originally an itinerant company, the Lookingglass settled into its place in Chicago’s always vibrant theatre-scene and into its home on 821 North Michigan Avenue in Streeterville. Winner of over 40 Joseph Jefferson Awards and known for productions ranging from The Little Prince and Rick Bayless in Cascabel to Lookingglass Alice and Manuscript Found in Saragossa—the Lookingglass Company tries to redefine the limits of theatrical experience and to make theatre exhilarating.

Boundary Map of Streeterville Chicago

Downtown Chicago — Then and Now: River North Edition

The chic and artsy River North neighborhood that we know of today wasn’t always that way back in the day! In fact, in the early 20th century, River North wasn’t even called River North — it was originally called “Smokey Hollow.” The neighborhood has an interesting and rich history that would surprise you, starting from how it got its name to how it became the popular spot that it is today.

River North: Then

River North, or “Smokey Hollow,” used to be an area filled with so many factories that the smoke used to block the sunlight — hence the name. Despite the smog, Smokey Hollow was a major hotspot for transportation because it had railroad tracks that linked Chicago to its surrounding states. These railroad tracks exist even to this day — they’re hidden underneath the Merchandise Mart, which used to be the largest building in the world when it was first built in the 1930’s! Merchandise Mart was mainly used as a storage warehouse back in the day.

In 1974, Smokey Hollow became River North — all thanks to Albert Friedman, an up-and-coming Chicago real estate developer. He bought, built, and restored commercial properties throughout the neighborhood and rented out the units to photographers, art galleries, and advertising agencies to help turn it into the hip area that it is today — The River North Gallery District.

River North: Now

Currently, River North is the neighborhood that is surrounded by Michigan Avenue on the east, Chicago Avenue on the north, and the Chicago River on the south and the west. It’s become one of the most popular spots for a night out on the town, has tons of great restaurants, and many places to shop at! Along with that, River North still has its rich artistic and creative roots with its community of artists, interior designers, architects, and photographers. This trendy and urban neighborhood filled with beautiful buildings and luxury Chicago apartments is only missing one thing: you!

Ready to become a part of the River North community? You can choose from many of the downtown Chicago apartments in this gorgeous neighborhood! Call us or stop by our office at 180 N. Wacker to speak with a friendly and knowledgeable agent about your downtown Chicago apartment search.

Renting & Living in River North

River North traffic in a blur.

Once upon a time Chicago’s River North was a downtown industrial zone known as “Smokey Hollow” that had become a warehouse district. Forty years or so ago when all those warehouses closed, the spacious available real estate those shuttered warehouses represented was redeveloped; it attracted a wave of artists, writers and start-up entrepreneurs interested in affordable lofts, studios and convertible office spaces. The residential neighborhood they created was vibrant but struggled to overcome its reputation as a former red light district. Today, all of that’s changed. The River North of 2015 has one of the highest concentrations of design firms in the United States. In addition to Chicago’s storied Magnificent Mile, the neighborhood houses a string of high-end apparel boutiques, an expanding ring of up-and-coming art galleries, and the thickest cluster of restaurants slash entertainment venues in Chicago, all of which play home to the urban professionals who live work and play in and around them. Over the last few years, River North has overtaken Rush Street as Chicago’s nightlife hub, boasting see-and-be-seen spots ranging from Mercadito to Stout Barrel House and Siena Tavern to EDM mecca Sound Bar, not to mention the military themed The Underground.

Bordered by the Chicago River on the south and west, 800 N Chicago Ave on the north and 150 E Michigan Ave on the east; the neighborhood sits in an ideal location that’s close to The Loop, the Near West Side, Streeterville, the Gold Coast, Old Town and even Lincoln Park. The Ontario Street feeder ramp offers residents quick and easy access to the Kennedy, Dan Ryan and Eisenhower Expressways. Public transit is similarly readily accessible. The CTA’s Red, Brown and Purple lines trisect River North and the neighborhood is traversed numerous bus lines. Also, there is practically no need for UBER as taxis are instantly available on most area streets 24 hours a day.

What’s Attracting the Renters to River North

River North has seen a dramatic spike in its residential population over the last ten years. Chicago’s educated and affluent have been drawn into the neighborhood by its growing selection of new and nearly-new lofts, rental condos, high-rise apartment complexes, not to mention the sprinkling of vintage walk-ups, townhouses and single-family homes that are available to rent. Many of the buildings offer breathtaking skyline views of downtown Chicago.

Former artist lofts that have been converted into gourmet restaurants, exclusive night clubs, high-end retail outlets, galleries and office spaces are ubiquitous in River North, making it a walk-to-work neighborhood for many residents. It’s been accurately said that the overwhelming visual variety of the neighborhood’s architecture alone has made the area attractive to prospective renters. You can linger on tree-lined blocks of two-story Victorians and marvel at way the sunlight plays off of Trump Tower in the afternoons.

Renting & Living in the Gold Coast

Chicago’s Gold Coast is without a doubt one of the most luxurious residential neighborhoods anywhere in the world. Nestled just beyond the edge of the Loop proper, the Gold Coast is a mix of grand 19th century mansions, luxury high-rise condominiums and renovated grey and brownstone walkups. Here, old and new seamlessly blend together with the connecting thread of wealth and status. Bounded on the south by Oak Street and East Lake Shore Drive, on the north by North Avenue, from Lake Michigan west to Clark Street; the Gold Coast, has a decidedly more residential feel than other downtown Chicago neighborhoods. Shaded avenues, landscaped walkways and prim wrought-iron fences add to the neighborhood’s refined appeal. A stroll among the massive stone structures that once housed many of Chicago’s wealthiest and most influential families is breathtaking. Sharing the block with lofty, contemporary condos are majestic, symmetrical Georgian Revival mansions and impressive, stone-turreted Richardsonian Romanesque townhouses that unquestionably suit the elite, but welcome the attention of any passerby. In fact, Gold Coast neighborhood architecture and history is celebrated by annual walking tours sponsored by architectural foundations.

What Attracts Renters to Chicago’s Gold Coast

The Gold Coast got its start in the late 1800’s as the Astor Street District. Today’s Gold Coast incorporates this original district and extends beyond it. The original Astor Street District was named after John Jacob Astor, one of the richest people in the country. He did not live in Chicago, but was a respected citizen with several achievements and his name gave the neighborhood a status of wealth which remains even today. In 1875, Lake Shore Drive became a popular spot for leisurely lakefront rides. As a result, the Gold Coast area became more frequently visited. In the ensuing two decades, Potter Palmer, the Chicago Archdiocese and James Charnley built mansions in the area. They were soon followed by other wealthy families, bringing up the status of the area and giving it a reputation as a neighborhood of influential citizens. As the neighborhood became more densely populated, there wasn’t as much space for mansions, and high-rise apartment buildings were constructed.

Today’s Gold Coast retains all of the prestige and reputation that it has enjoyed over the last century. Encompassing the north end of the Magnificent Mile, the neighborhood is home to some of Downtown Chicago’s most elite shops, world-class hotels, posh restaurants, and unparalleled architecture. The atmosphere here speaks of tradition and grandeur. Walk on State Parkway between Banks and Schiller to see the old Playboy mansion. Residents can stroll down Astor Street District for an impromptu tour of Victorian architecture. Don’t miss the quaint, historic firehouse on Chicago between Michigan and Lake Shore. Find designer boutiques on Oak Street. Head to Rush and Division for classy cocktails. And take time to visit Oak Street Beach, which offers a unique beach experience: sunbathing while gazing at Downtown Chicago’s skyline.

Attractions in the Gold Coast

Living in Gold Coast Chicago, there’s always something to do, surrounded by incredible shopping and dining opportunities:

  • The Purple Pig – The Purple Pig draws its inspiration from the Mediterranean and packs its menu with an accessible mix of antipasti, cured meats, cheeses, and smears; all the hottest commodities (sopressata, bone marrow, Mediterranean wines) are there for the taking and admirably done. Even gambles pay off, as in the tender sepia cuttlefish a la plancha with toasted almonds and fried rosemary.
  • The Signature Lounge – Instead of visiting the John Hancock Center’s zenith during daylight hours, opt for an evening cocktail in the building’s high-flying lounge. Located on the 96th floor, the dimly lit bar has dazzling 360-degree views of the city. With three salons to choose from, you can romance a date at a window table in the south lounge or socialize with a group on couches in the west lounge.
  • Wolford – This shoebox-sized storefront specializes in one essential niche of women’s fashion: high-end, high-quality hosiery. The Austrian-based luxury line sells everything from animal-print leggings to flame-patterned tights to your basic opaques in all the colors of the rainbow. But unlike your standard Spanx, these may very well last a lifetime.
  • Oliver Peoples – This minimalist white storefront showcases all three of Oliver Peoples’ trendy eyewear brands: Paul Smith, Mosley Tribes and the namesake Oliver Peoples. Find delicate metal designs and vintage plastic classics like the original, circular O’Malley frames on display for fashionable four-eyes.

Located on East Chicago Avenue and designed by architect Josef Paul Kleihues, the five-story building has three floors of dedicated gallery space extending from a central glass atrium. Highlighting pieces from 1945 to the present, the permanent collection focuses on surrealism, minimalism, conceptual photography and work by Chicago-based artists. Pieces include those by Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Alexander Calder. Exhibits change monthly, and free docent-led tours provide insight into select works.

Parking in Downtown Chicago for Luxury Apartment Dwellers

While many Chicagoans are able to rely solely on the convenient CTA options downtown for their daily transportation needs, many residents of the Loop still have to account for the monthly parking cost of owning a car. Downtown Apartment Company agents appreciate that this is a significant monthly expense that our clients have to budget for, so here is a compilation of some of the best deals for monthly parking in downtown Chicago and around apartment search areas! While this isn’t meant to be a comprehensive guide to parking downtown, we hope it’s helpful to give an idea of pricing for one of the larger monthly costs apartment renters need to consider.

 Gold Coast / Old Town

Apartment hunters looking in the Near North area (Gold Coast, Old Town) around Division Street, LaSalle Drive, and North Avenue should budget from $160-$260 for parking depending on whether the building’s parking is attached and covered. 55 W. Chestnut offers one of the lowest monthly parking options in the area of $160 for attached, uncovered parking.

River North

Because this area in River North around North Clark and Kinzie Street is in such high demand with endless shopping, dining, and nightlife options, attached monthly parking tends to run around $260 per month, on par with Loop parking options. River North Park offers the most competitive attached monthly parking rate of $230 on West Illinois Street by North Orleans.

West Loop / Fulton River District

Street parking during the milder months in the West Loop is a popular choice for residents in the West Loop and Fulton River District neighborhoods. Monthly parking at buildings can range anywhere from $150-$260 which depends on how new and large the property is. 1313 W. Randolph takes the cake for the least expensive monthly parking option of $150.

Near South Loop

Those searching for an apartment in the South Loop and Printer’s Row areas of Chicago can expect to pay around $220 for monthly parking. Commuters of the South Loop should also consider looking into the economical option at InterPark on South Federal Street which offers a $130 per month special for those who use their cars during normal business hours.

Additional Parking Resources

ParkingSpotter.com and ParkWhiz are helpful resources you can turn to for alternative options to attached parking. Simply type in your address of the building or your neighborhood of choice and the sites will populate monthly parking options with the contact information and cost.

If you have guests in from out of town, the SpotHero smartphone app can be helpful for them to search available shorter term parking and reserve it on the spot. This tool is also a great help for residents who just don’t want to spend precious time circling the blocks to find a spot!

We know that living expenses add up quickly when you live in a city that has so much to offer like downtown Chicago, so we want you to feel like you’re receiving the best resources and service available to you! Come into our office at 180 N. Wacker to meet a friendly and resourceful Downtown Apartment Company leasing agent today or give us a call to get started on your search at (312) 772-3929.

Winter Fun in These Chicago Loop High Rises!

It’s easy to enjoy living and renting in the Chicago Loop when the weather’s comparatively mild, but how about when the temperature plummets and the Windy City’s infamous hawk arrives? When you’re searching for your next apartment rental, make sure to consider the comfort and convenience a luxury high rise in Chicago’s Loop can offer. Here’s a list of a few of the amenities that help downtown renters stay active and entertained whenever a wave of polar vortex weather strikes!

Indoor Swimming Pools

Chicago summers are notoriously short so there’s only a brief window of time when you can take advantage of the fabulous outdoor pools downtown. However, when you rent an apartment at 200 Squared, OneEleven, Randolph Tower or 73 E. Lake in the Loop, you can still take a dip or swim laps year round without leaving home. You’ll also find this amenity at some our favorite high rise buildings like Optima Center and Axis in Streeterville or if you’re interested in the new Lakeshore East neighborhood, you’ll want to check out Aqua and North Harbor Tower. If you’re just looking to soak and relax, you’ll love the spas at Coast, Tides, Streeter Place, The Streeter, and Parc Huron in River North.

Fully Equipped Gyms

Want to maintain that physique you worked so hard for? Is becoming more active one of your New Year’s resolutions? You won’t need a gym membership when you have a fully functional health club down the hall from your apartment like 500 N. Lakeshore’s Equinox equipment equipped gym, the Amli Lofts’s Fitness on Demand studio, or Catalyst’s rooftop fitness center. Does the basketball season make you want to show off your court skills? Indoor basketball courts have become a hot commodity at luxury rental buildings in Chicago’s Loop because they are also a great space to offer complimentary fitness classes for residents. Some of the buildings that offer this sought-out amenity are K2 and Alta in the Fulton River District section of West Loop, Grand Plaza in River North, and The Streeter and Optima in Streeterville.

Media and Game Areas
Feeling antsy to get out of your space but don’t want to brave the cold? Many Downtown Chicago high rises offer their renter’s media rooms designed to feel more like your favorite movie theater than your favorite chair at home. 215 West Washington, MDA City Apartments, Hubbard Place, and K2 all offer fantastic media rooms.

When winter leaves you feeling playful or competitive you’ll be able to take some snacks or drinks down to the ping pong table at Optima or McClurg Court, the poker or shuffleboard tables at 500 N. Lakeshore, or the pool table at The Scott Residences.

No need to dread the winter months if you’re a renter in Chicago’s Loop! Contact an agent at Downtown Apartment Company to learn more about which luxury high rise will be your next home! Stop by our office at 180 N. Wacker or give us a call today!

WANTED: The Best Chicago Summer

Renting in downtown Chicago is all about experiencing the best of everything, from the hot new restaurants on West Randolph Street and the fantastic music festivals at Union Square Park to the world class shopping along the Magnificent Mile. In a city infamous for its blustery winter weather, summertime is by far the most highly anticipated season. After Winter 2013-2014, which saw the term “Chiberia” coined, Chicagoans are salivating over the outing opportunities presented by recent rising temperatures. As the balmy weather approaches, we’re all thinking about how to make the most of it. The hardest part is planning your schedule to fit it all in! Fear not, Chiberians, consider this your guide to having the BEST SUMMER EVER.

What’s your jam? Whether your favorite artist is slated to perform at the Cadillac Palace Theater, or you’re into exploring cutting-edge bands that come through the MID, one of the best parts about June through August in Chicago is the spectacular lineup of concerts. Pro Tip: Check out “Downtown Sound”, Millennium Park’s critically-acclaimed music series. Not only does the program typically feature something to suit every music lover’s taste, but these concerts are 100% free.

There are a number of other outdoor activities unique to Chicago that should make it on every downtown renter’s “must see” list this summer. Some of my personal favorites include the Architecture Boat Tour, the Air and Water Show, and The Taste of Chicago, the world’s largest food festival, held annually in Grant Park. Many neighborhoods also offer Farmers Markets, including the Gold Coast, whose market is located on Division Street between State and Clark and the recently added Fulton Market Pop-Up located on Fulton Street between Peoria and Green.

Your summer isn’t complete until you check out one of the city’s famous outdoor patios. Grab a few friends and head up to Rooftop at Little Goat in the West Loop, notorious for serving up sloppy but delicious upscale breakfast fare and fantastic people watching. Not your scene? Try Drumbar, a gorgeous rooftop lounge atop the Raffaello Hotel in the Gold Coast. Think craft cocktails, views of Lake Michigan, and a speakeasy vibe. If you’re looking for more of a “see and be seen” atmosphere, make your way to the Loop and check out the ROOF at theWit Hotel, which features handcrafted cocktails and Mediterranean small plates.

Friends or family coming to town? Check out the downtown’s quintessential tourist hot spots: shopping on Michigan Avenue, taking a picture at The Bean, marveling at Navy Pier’s fireworks, and enjoying breathtaking views from 360 CHICAGO, formerly known as the John Hancock Observatory. No matter what you’re looking for this summer, whether it’s exploring different neighborhoods or relaxing at Oak Street Beach, Summer 2014 can be one for the record books. Just contact Downtown Apartment Company today to find your dream rental in downtown Chicago.
