Whether you’re visiting from out of town and looking to check out some of the classic holiday events, or if you’re a local Chicagoan looking to switch up the same traditions you do every year, here’s our guide to the top holiday events near downtown Chicago!
Christkindl Market (The Loop)
The Loop is the place to be if you’re looking to soak in all of the holiday spirit and check all of the holiday events off your list. Beyond the ornately designed rows of lighted trees lining the streets and the familiar names of annual holiday shows on the theater marquees, the holiday events in the Loop seem endless. However, year after year Christkindl Market proves to be a Chicago favorite.
Christkindl Market is held annually at Daley Plaza. Dozens of small wooden houses are set up to resemble 16th century Germany and filled with vendors that include artisan ornaments, handmade candles and soaps, mulled wine (Gluhwein) and spiced cider served in festive souvenir mugs, and traditional German fare. You can also catch live music, dancing, and pop up events in the main dining tent.
Check out this festive market any day through December 24th.

On Monday, December 12th or Saturday, December 17th head to Timeout Market in the Fulton Market part of the West Loop for live jazz to celebrate the holidays. Timeout Market is a food hall (think upscale food court) with outposts of the trendiest Chicago restaurants, coffee, and cocktails. The main level is a great place to grab a bite and the rooftop level is a popular neighborhood hangout.
The Market spans 50,000 square feet with 18 different restaurant concepts.
Igloos at IO Godfrey (River North)
There’s nothing Chicagoans love like a good rooftop. At IO Godfrey, enjoy rooftop season even in the winter as their rooftop transforms into a winter wonderland. Reserve bottle service in an igloo to stay warm as you enjoy the stunning city views.
Catch a Classic Holiday Film (Logan Square, Lakeview)
The Music Box theater in the Southport Corridor in Lakeview and the Logan Theater in Logan Square are both charming, old time cinemas. Head to either of these boutique movie theaters for classic holiday films like It’s a Wonderful Life and White Christmas all season.
Winterland at Gallagher Way (Wrigleyville)
Switch up your typical holiday events at Winterland. Head to Gallagher Way at Wrigley Field for rides, ice skating, hot chocolate, games, and even ice bumper cars through January 8th. Tickets are required in advance and available to purchase here.
