The group behind this new development, 16 on Center, is no newbie at creating popular Chicago venues, with Thalia Hall, Revival Food Hall, Lou’s Assembly, Longman and Eagle, The Good Ambler, Space, and more all on their roster. While 16 on Center plans to spruce up and modernize the former salt plant, the historic site will keep its original character and iconic signage. Developer, R2, recently proposed a new development that would bring office, entertainment, retail, and dining space, as well as over 500 feet of new riverfront space to the Morton Salt warehouse site. Upon approval for a zoning change from warehouse to commercial of what’s been dubbed the “Salt District”, R2 will also seek landmark status. R2 plans on keeping the famous “Morton Salt Umbrella Girl” sign, which is visible from the expressway.

R2 purchased the site at 1357 N. Elston in 2017, roughly two years after Morton closed down their factory after 86 years of use. The public sentiment seems to be overwhelmingly popular, with the project bringing hundreds of jobs and public green space to an area that has been out of use for several years.
The Morton Salt warehouse is located in a prime location along the north branch of the river in Lincoln Park. This 760 acre corridor of Lincoln Park and the Near North Side has been known for housing industrial sites, until the city changed its zoning to allow for (and encourage) other mixed use development in this “North Branch” corridor.
Among other office and public recreation developments underway in the area, Sterling Bay announced it’s plans for Lincoln Yards, a mega development bounded by the Kennedy Expressway to the west, Webster Ave to the north, Clybourn Ave to the east, and North Ave to the south. Plans for the massive Lincoln Yards development include public riverfront space, residential, office, retail, and hospitality space, bike paths, art installations, and other recreation space. This stretch of Lincoln Park has only grown in popularity with developers.

9:00 AM Lincoln Park Zoo
Lincoln Park Zoo is a unique place to experience the juxtaposition of the concrete jungle and natural jungle or “see gorillas climb trees as the Willis Tower looms in the distance” as LPZ’s website puts it. See a wide variety of species, enjoy the tranquil paths, or rent a paddleboat on the zoo’s pond. Lincoln Park Zoo has a full events calendar between Fall Fest, ZooLights, Fitness at the Zoo, Breakfast with Animals, and more. Lincoln Park Zoo has free admission and is open 365 days per year.
12:00 PM Chicago History Museum
The Chicago History Museum features multiple rotating exhibits as well as educational programs and events. One currently featured exhibit is “Modern By Design: Chicago Streamlines America”, which features 300 objects, photos, and other various materials, like Radio Flyer wagons and Wrigley Gum, from the 1930s to 1950s that highlight Chicago’s role in shaping popular American designs and products.
2:00 PM Shopping on Armitage
Armitage Street is lined with boutiques, cafes, novelty gift shops, juice bars, galleries, medspas, and even a cryotherapy bar. Stop by Cynthia Rowley, Art Effect, or Lori’s Shoes to get a taste of Armitage Street shopping in Lincoln Park.
Lori’s Shoes is a boutique with specialty shoes known as the “sole” of Chicago. Lincoln Park is a prime location for excellent theatre in Chicago. Go to Second City to see some of the best improv in the country. Steppenwolf Theatre is also known as one of the best theater companies in the country and shows feature-length plays in an intimate setting. Tickets are required well in advance for Steppenwolf.

Wrap up your day in Lincoln Park with some live music at Kingston Mines or Lincoln Hall.
Kingston Mines blues club features live bands on two stages until late at night. Kingston Mines is more of a bar setting that has live music as opposed to Lincoln Hall, which is a designated music venue. Shows at Lincoln Hall typically range from $15-35 per ticket. Just as the weather’s cooling down, the restaurant scene is heating up! Check out these three noteworthy restaurants in Downtown Chicago opening this upcoming week.
Phil Stefani (Phil Stefani Signature Restaurants) and Adolfo Garcia (Pearl Tavern) are bringing a taste of 1940’s Cuba to River North. The new River North spot will host one of the country’s largest rum selections as well as live Cuban music with an intimate, speakeasy vibe. Furthermore, decor will feature gold leaf oval ceilings and island chic wallpaper with palm trees. Stylish accents include a brass bar, cement tiles imported from the Dominican Republic, and an eight foot mounted marlin.
Opening Saturday, October 8th at 601 N Wells Street.
Chef Derek Rylon already has a loyal fan base with Batter & Berries (Lincoln Park). Therefore, his new Kansas City style barbecue concept is being met with great excitement in the South Loop for its downtown Chicago opening. Moreover, Rylon’s Smokehouse will feature a rotating menu of whiskey-based sauces. The 2400 square foot sit-down restaurant will host a selection of pit grilled and smoked dishes.
Opening Wednesday, October 12 at 67 E Cermack Road.
Finally, the highly anticipated Beacon Tavern opens this week in the heart of the Loop, steps from Michigan Avenue. This new concept from Billy Lawless (The Dawson, River West) will feature an large meat selection. Along with the impressive oyster selection, Beacon will offer a wide array of seafood options. “Our guests can expect a menu loaded with fresh interpretations of tavern classics and seafood-forward dishes and libations, which play heavily on classic American cocktails with a twist,” Lawless said in a statement, courtesy of DNA Info. Furthermore, Beacon Tavern will house an extensive wine selection.
