Old Town Spice House has graced Wells Street for over 60 years. From Michelin starred chefs to people who only know how to make pasta, the Spice House is a neighborhood favorite. The Spice House was founded in 1957 by Bill and Ruth Penzey and over the years has scaled into a global brand. Because they have such a broad global network of suppliers, Spice House has built a reputation for having some of the highest quality products and widest selection. The Spice House is also a go-to resource on recipes and all things spice. Although the business has grown, Spice House has still retained its quaint character.
After a fire last July caused significant damage to the original structure, which was constructed in the 1800s, Spice House used it as an opportunity to blend modern renovations and repairs with elements of the original building, and even preserve some of the original features. For instance, the reclaimed wood rafters that were previously covered have now been painted and cleaned so they could be left exposed. The building’s original exposed brick has also been refurbished. They also uncovered two of the windows at the back of the store to add natural light. Gensler architects led the way on the renovations.
The historic charm, loyal neighborhood customer base, wafting spice aromas, and overall engaging experience of visiting the Spice House has kept the brick and mortar store competitive in an age of increasingly popular e-commerce. The brick and mortar store is also central to their wholesale business, which supplies to local restaurants, bakeries, and breweries in Chicago.
Whether you’re looking for a specific rare form of truffle oil or just looking for a unique place to stop in and “spice up” your weekend stroll, be sure to check out Old Town Spice House (and grab a sample of the delectable crystalized ginger while you’re in there)!
This week, Moody Bible Institute created a preliminary agreement to sell 10 acres in the Near North Side’s Old Town neighborhood to luxury high rise developer, JDL.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the land at 820 N. Lasalle will be developed into 2500 or more luxury apartments and condos between a half dozen high rises totaling up to 5.3 million square feet. The land for sale is mostly vacant with the exception of a few smaller structures. The soccer field west of Walter Payton College Prep is also included in the sale. The same stretch of Old Town has seen significant residential development in the past couple years and already has several projects in the works, namely, Onni Group’s Old Town Park phases I-III at Atrium Village.
When the land went up for sale in the summer of 2019, Moody Bible president, Mark Jobe, stated that the decision to sell the land was motivated by the desire to expand the impact of Moody Bible’s ministry. Moody Bible intends on staying in the southern portion of it’s Old Town campus, its home since 1886.
JDL has another large development in the works on the border of the Gold Coast and River North called One Chicago. One Chicago is slated to be a megadevelopment with rental apartments, condos, retail, a premiere lifestyle fitness center, and commercial space, including a large new Whole Foods. Additionally, JDL is the developer behind the Chicago luxury rental buildings 1000 S. Clark, 640 N. Wells, Two West Delaware, Halsted Flats, Eight Eleven Uptown, 1225 Old Town, and The Scott Residences, as well as Chicago luxury condo building, No 9 Walton.

Victorian-era architecture, brick alleyways, a warm and welcoming community, and a bustling creative arts culture — these are just some of the many wonderful things that have come to define Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood. As a historic district, Old Town is a home to lots of famous buildings like St. Michael’s Church — one of only seven buildings that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and still stands today. Exploring this neighborhood will teach you a thing or two about Chicago’s rich history, and how its current residents keep that history alive!
OLD TOWN: THEN
Before it was called “Old Town,” this neighborhood was known as “The Cabbage Patch.” Originally, it was a popular area for immigrant farmers in the 19th century to grow their crops — specifically cabbage ones, along with celery and potatoes. During the World War II era, the Chicago’s Civil Defense Agency marked off North, Clark, and Ogden avenues as a defense area. This triangular area, today, is known as the Old Town Triangle. It is managed and preserved by a non profit organization called the Old Town Triangle Association.
The actual “Old Town” name comes from the popular annual art fairs, or “The Old Town Holiday” fairs that were hosted in the years following the war. As time went on, Old Town also became a mecca for hippie culture and folk music, throughout the 1960s and 1970s. And still, to this day, folk music thrives in Old Town and is a huge part of its identity.
OLD TOWN: NOW
Today, the Old Town neighborhood is a charming and vibrant community that’s brimming with landmarks, events, and activities to enjoy! Located in the Near North Side community, Old Town is bordered by Armitage Avenue, Clark Street, Halsted Street, and Division Street. One place that stands out in particular is the famous Old Town School of Folk Music — a performing and teaching center that continues to create talented musicians and performers of all ages.
Along with the music scene, the neighborhood is also home to The Old Town Art Fair — one of the oldest summer art fairs in America. As far as nightlife goes, don’t let Old Town’s name fool you! There are plenty of bars, taverns, and concerts to check out. With everything to see, create, and explore here, Old Town could easily become your new place to call home!
While many Chicagoans are able to rely solely on the convenient CTA options downtown for their daily transportation needs, many residents of the Loop still have to account for the monthly parking cost of owning a car. Downtown Apartment Company agents appreciate that this is a significant monthly expense that our clients have to budget for, so here is a compilation of some of the best deals for monthly parking in downtown Chicago and around apartment search areas! While this isn’t meant to be a comprehensive guide to parking downtown, we hope it’s helpful to give an idea of pricing for one of the larger monthly costs apartment renters need to consider.
Gold Coast / Old Town
Apartment hunters looking in the Near North area (Gold Coast, Old Town) around Division Street, LaSalle Drive, and North Avenue should budget from $160-$260 for parking depending on whether the building’s parking is attached and covered. 55 W. River North Park offers the most competitive attached monthly parking rate of $230 on West Illinois Street by North Orleans.
West Loop / Fulton River District
Street parking during the milder months in the West Loop is a popular choice for residents in the West Loop and Fulton River District neighborhoods. Monthly parking at buildings can range anywhere from $150-$260 which depends on how new and large the property is. 1313 W. Randolph takes the cake for the least expensive monthly parking option of $150.

Additional Parking Resources
ParkingSpotter.com and ParkWhiz are helpful resources you can turn to for alternative options to attached parking. Simply type in your address of the building or your neighborhood of choice and the sites will populate monthly parking options with the contact information and cost.
If you have guests in from out of town, the SpotHero smartphone app can be helpful for them to search available shorter term parking and reserve it on the spot. This tool is also a great help for residents who just don’t want to spend precious time circling the blocks to find a spot!
