Behind the Namesake: Then & Now

Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the shores of Lake Michigan surrounding the city were commonly used as grounds for cleanup. During this time “Captain” George Wellington Streeter’s ship had become lodged upon a sandbar in present day’s Streeterville. Streeter welcomed building contractors to the area and claimed this newly created neighborhood as his own.

Today, thriving with tourists and residents alike, Streeterville is a sure stand out in Chicago culture. With sweeping lakefront property and famous Navy Pier, the Streeterville neighborhood is eccentric and exciting. Streeterville is a perfect combination of modern and classic in the architecture, food, and attractions; there is truly something for everyone.

Streeterville Attractions

Home of Navy Pier, Streeterville hosts a magnitude of attractions in Chicago. Navy Pier houses some fabulous dining options including DMK Burger and Fish Bar, Riva, Big City Chicken, Goddess and the Baker and much more. Feel free to take cocktails to go while you continue to explore the pier as well! Most iconic is the gigantic Ferris wheel positioned in the center of the pier. Indoor gardens, carnival rides and yachts line the rest of the pier.

Fireworks at Navy Pier can be seen from most of downtown Chicago every Wednesday and Saturday night!

Streeterville is also home to an abundance of higher level academia and one of the top 15 hospitals in the United States. Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Medical School, Loyola Law School, and University of Chicago Booth School of Business are all located in Streeterville.

The Magnificent Mile is known by all as home to some of the greatest shopping and restaurants the city has to offer. Travel by water taxi or catch the amazing, and educational Architectural Boat Tour down the Chicago River- a perfect way to enjoy a Chicago summer day! The Architectural Boat Tour is a must for all visitors and locals of the city!

Restaurants

Nestled into the back of a building of the ‘Mag Mile’ is Purple Pig. Best known for their next level charcuterie, cheeses and creative small plates and ‘magnificent’ wine list! Yolk Streeterville is a delicious and popular spot for breakfast or brunch. Enjoy the sites of Streeterville with sidewalk seating at Coco Pazzo Café; a longtime neighborhood favorite Italian spot. Neighborhood Living

It’s no wonder people are looking to call Streeterville home – it is home to the riverwalk that lines the city, lake front property and incredible downtown city views, but is much quieter, more residential, and more tree-lined than the central part of downtown. Streeterville residents enjoy the wide selection of boutique fitness studios, like Orange Theory Fitness, Shred415, and Core Power Yoga. Try bowling and bocce ball at Pinstripes or catch a movie at AMC Theater! Lake Shore Park and Milton Lee Olive Park offer tranquil green space in the center of the concrete jungle.
